"In my lifetime we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. If this is evolution, I believe within twelve years we'll be voting for plants."
- Lewis Black

If we detain people without hearings, wiretap our own citizens, and torture people on mere suspicions, the terrorists have won, because we have given up everything our country has stood for.

Um ... Looks like we have given up everything our country has stood for.

Irrelevant But Not Meaningless

Hey Mike,

I wonít vote for Barack Obama. I canít vote for Barack Obama. And itís not because heís not liberal enough for me. I gave up on the idea of a progressive president before I was old enough to vote. No Ö the reason I wonít vote for Obama is because heís just slightly less murderous than George W. Bush. And a man with bloody hands doesnít have our best interests at heart.

So who will I vote for?

Who cares?

Each man is a bought and paid for tool of the Dominant Culture. Yíknow Ö the driving force behind the destruction of our planet. The choice put before us is the rate of destruction. Fast or Really Fast. An estimated 2.5 billion dollars will be spent to persuade Americans to vote for Fast, or Really Fast. The Dominant Culture isnít spending a nickel on Really Slow, or Not At All.

I was in a Starbuckís a couple of months ago talking to a guy who was proposing we go into business together. We talked about all sorts of things and eventually we touched on American Politics. He claimed he was apolitical. He said he didnít follow the news. But then he said, ďI donít want to see Obama reelected

He didnít say, ďIím voting for Romney.Ē He didnít say he would vote for a third party candidate. He didnít know Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act, nor did he know what the NDAA was. He didnít know any of the reasons why I couldnít vote for Obama. He was apolitical. He didnít follow the news. Somehow Ö without reading a word about anything Ö he had come to the conclusion that he didnít want to see Obama reelected.

I know he didnít read the news, or anything else for that matter, because there wasnít anything to read in his house. No magazines, newspapers, or books were visible anywhere. Reading material was conspicuous by its absence. Since heís a couple of years younger than I am I asked him what he did during the Vietnam War. His answer? Smoked dope and partied. Well Ö after all it was the 60ís and early 70ís. Smoking dope and partying was not Ö um Ö uncommon. But it was also the time my generation was directly exposed to the darker, bloodier aspects of the American Empire. Or to put it more precisely, white kids were finding out the government didnít mind killing them too.

I canít remember who said it or where I read it but it went something like this:

Living in America while the Vietnam War was raging was like being at an elegant party where everybody looks like theyíre having a good time Ö while at the same time pretending to ignore the stench wafting from the kitchen.

My prospective business partner wasnít in danger of getting his ass drafted Ö so he could party on. But why didnít he notice the bad smells coming out of the kitchen? And now decades later Ö why didnít he want Obama to be reelected?

And why was I even talking to this guy?

The dumbest darlings of the American Press are the dim-bulbs trotted out every four years so lavish attention can be paid to Ö The Undecided Voters. According to an Associated Press-GfK poll last June, 27% of the electorate doesnít know who theyíll support in November. Are there really that many people who canít tell the difference between Fast and Really Fast? I guess so. And in a sense, I like those morons better than my prospective business partner.

If you donít know anything about Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, if you donít have a clue about any of their ideas, why would you not want to see Obama get elected?

Pure and Simple.

Stupidity and Racism or Racism and Stupidity. It doesnít really make any difference what order you choose. The end result is the guyís a stupid racist. Is there such a thing as a ďsmartĒ racist? Some racists are smarter than others but none of them are Quiz Kid material. So the question arises Ö why was I talking to him? And why did I continue talking to him after his stupid fucking racist remark?

Self-delusion and greed.

I didnít think he was that bad and I wanted the project to proceed quickly.

My first mistake was not getting up from the table at Starbuckís and walking out. Instead I dialed down my misgivings and rationalized. Is there even a business partner out there who would pass my political test? My second mistake was not taking the time to find out.

Last week, he tried to pull a fast one with the money and I finally bailed. Iím not proud of the fact that money was the last straw.

But Ö thereís always a ďbutĒ isnít there? I canít defend Barack Obama. If somebody doesnít want to vote for him I understand. Iím not going to vote for him either. But it has to be for the right reasons. As the nuns in arithmetic class used to say, ďYou have to show your work

You canít vote for Obama because heís a war criminal? Iím with you. If you donít want to vote for him because heís black? Get the fuck outta here.

So now at the ripe old age of should have known better Ö Iíve relearned a lesson I first learned way back when. Forty years ago it was ďNever Sell Marijuana to People You Donít Know.Ē Now itís, ďNever start a business with Stupid Racist A-holes.Ē

Looping back to the beginning of this thing, though our vote is irrelevant Ö itís still a pretty good Rorschach test. The electoral system might be broken, but whom we vote for, or against, speaks volumes.

The discrepancy between the kind of society many Germans thought they were building and the reality of the horror of the Third Reich presents one of the most intriguing questions of our age. How could Fascism -- have happened in a modern, industrialized, educated nation?

Deep Green Resistance - Strategy to Save the Planet
Aric McBay, Lierre Keith, and Derrick Jensen

For years, Derrick Jensen has asked his audiences, ďDo you think this culture will undergo a voluntary transformation to a sane and sustainable way of life?Ē No one ever says yes.

Deep Green Resistance starts where the environmental movement leaves off: industrial civilization is incompatible with life. Technology canít fix it, and shoppingóno matter how greenówonít stop it. To save this planet, we need a serious resistance movement that can bring down the industrial economy. Deep Green Resistance evaluates strategic options for resistance, from nonviolence to guerrilla warfare, and the conditions required for those options to be successful.

The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder
by Vincent Bugliosi

"I hope that at some time in the near future a courageous U.S. attorney general, U.S. attorney, state attorney general, or district attorney in America who is committed to the rule of law and who has dedicated his career to enforcing the law fairly against all who, big or small, violate it, will hear the cries for justice from the graves of the thousands upon thousands of men, women, and children who had their lives violently cut short because of the lies of a man who smiled through it all. And that, with a sense of uncompromising righteousness, he will take the ample case I have laid out in this book before an American jury to let them decide whether George W Bush is guilty or not guilty of murder, and if so, what his punishment should be.

Even if this doesn't happen and what I have said in this book receives all the attention of a new fly in the forest, I do know that someone had to say what is written on the pages of this book."

Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, the Powerful Forces That Put It in the White House, and What Their Influence Means for America
by Russ Baker

How did Bush happen? How did George W. Bush, of all people, rise to the most powerful position in the world? This simple question sparked a five-year investigative odyssey by Russ Baker. What he found will force us to rethink virtually everything we thought we knew about the Bush family and its role in shaping recent American history.

In FAMILY OF SECRETS, Baker reveals that Bush, the people around him, and his policies are but an extreme, very public manifestation of what his family and its circle have always been about: an interlocking web of covert and overt machinations on behalf of a small cluster of elites-social, financial, industrial, military, intelligence-that enabled the Bush dynasty and propelled George W. Bush to the top.

Rules for Radicals
by Saul D Alinsky

"What follows is for those who want to change the world from what it is to what they believe it should be. The Prince was written by Machiavelli for the Haves on how to hold power. Rules for Radicals is written for the Have-Nots on how to take it away."

In 1971, Saul Alinsky wrote an entertaining classic on grassroots organizing titled Rules for Radicals. For Alinsky, organizing is the process of highlighting what is wrong and convincing people they can actually do something about it.

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
by Naomi Klein

Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine advances a truly unnerving argument: historically, while people were reeling from natural disasters, wars and economic upheavals, savvy politicians and industry leaders nefariously implemented policies that would never have passed during less muddled times. As Klein demonstrates, this reprehensible game of bait-and-switch isn't just some relic from the bad old days. It's alive and well in contemporary society, and coming soon to a disaster area near you. --Kim Hughes
