If we detain people without hearings, wiretap our own citizens, and torture people on mere suspicions, the terrorists have won, because we have given up everything our country has stood for.

Um ... Looks like we have given up everything our country has stood for.

We Came So Close …

Hey Mike,

Recently there's been a phrase that keeps popping up … "During the Bush Administration we came sooooo close …" and then whoever is talking lists the terrible things The Bush Crime Family did to destroy the country and alludes to the change of direction the country took after the election last November.

Well …

Wherever we came close to … we're still there. We haven't pulled back from the brink. We've slid closer to the crumbling edge. Millions of us have gone over.

Between now and Dec. 31, 2011 … for the next 17 months … every soldier and civilian killed in Iraq will have slipped off the edge into the pit.

And what about Afghanistan?

Remember way back when on September 24th, 2001 Secretary of State Colin Powell promised that the Bush Administration would finally provide the definitive proof of Osama bin Laden's involvement in the 9/11 attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center?

Powell told Tim Russert on Meet The Press, "I think in the near future, we will be able to put out a paper, a document, that will describe quite clearly the evidence that we have linking him to this attack."

Less than 24 hours later, President Bush quashed that idea.

Powell then quickly backtracked saying, "As we are able to provide information that is not sensitive or classified, I think we will try to do that in every way," - a much more cautious approach.

What was never made clear was how much information - classified or otherwise - pointed directly to Bin Laden or al Qaeda.

But in October we started bombing Afghanistan anyway. The Bush administration never told us what the damning evidence was against Bin Laden … and that was OK with us.

Afghanistan's deputy prime minister Haji Abdul Kabir said "If the Taliban is given evidence that Osama bin Laden is involved and the bombing campaign stopped, we would be ready to hand him over to a third country."

Not good enough. Why would Bush show any evidence to the government of a country he's already bombing when he wouldn't even show it to us?

Bush said, "There's no need to discuss innocence or guilt. We know he's guilty."

But Bush didn't commit US ground troops during the Battle of Tora Bora in late 2001 which led to bin Laden's escape. He didn't want bin Laden ... guilty or not ... He wanted a puppet government in Afghanistan.

8 years later we're still killing and propping up our puppet government. Obama's going to throw thousands upon thousands of new troops into Afghanistan and today the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Navy Adm. Mike Mullen said it is crucial that U.S., NATO and Afghan forces make progress in Afghanistan in the next 12 to 18 months.

Over the next 12 to 18 months how many Americans and Afghanis await extinction in the pit? How much longer will we feed human beings into it?

On the home front …

Every week 46,000 homes go into foreclosure. One in every eight Americans is now late on a house payment or already in foreclosure. Into the pit they go.

We could have saved them but Bush and then Obama decided that our trillions should save Wall Street instead.

Forty-one of the nation's 100 major labor markets are now saddled with double-digit unemployment rates.

The people want National Healthcare while our elected representatives are hard at work tweaking Private Healthcare insurance to our detriment. But the mouth breathers, led by corporate mouthpieces, believe Obamacare is hell bent on killing everybody's grandparents.

Right Wing Talking Heads are inciting their rabid base against Obama with their version of King Henry's "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?"

As long as Beck, O'Reilly, Limbaugh and the rest keep telling their audience that Obama is a threat to America … it's only a matter of time before one the lunatics behind one of the thousands of death threats Obama receives every day … tries to "save" the country.

This is where the Corporatocracy commanded Bush and Cheney to take us.

This is where the Corporatocracy is commanding Barack Obama to leave us.

This is where they like us.

I've heard that if you look into the abyss … it looks back.

People say, "We came so close … "

I say, "Don't Look Down."

The discrepancy between the kind of society many Germans thought they were building and the reality of the horror of the Third Reich presents one of the most intriguing questions of our age. How could Fascism -- have happened in a modern, industrialized, educated nation?

Deep Green Resistance - Strategy to Save the Planet
Aric McBay, Lierre Keith, and Derrick Jensen

For years, Derrick Jensen has asked his audiences, “Do you think this culture will undergo a voluntary transformation to a sane and sustainable way of life?” No one ever says yes.

Deep Green Resistance starts where the environmental movement leaves off: industrial civilization is incompatible with life. Technology can’t fix it, and shopping—no matter how green—won’t stop it. To save this planet, we need a serious resistance movement that can bring down the industrial economy. Deep Green Resistance evaluates strategic options for resistance, from nonviolence to guerrilla warfare, and the conditions required for those options to be successful.

The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder
by Vincent Bugliosi

"I hope that at some time in the near future a courageous U.S. attorney general, U.S. attorney, state attorney general, or district attorney in America who is committed to the rule of law and who has dedicated his career to enforcing the law fairly against all who, big or small, violate it, will hear the cries for justice from the graves of the thousands upon thousands of men, women, and children who had their lives violently cut short because of the lies of a man who smiled through it all. And that, with a sense of uncompromising righteousness, he will take the ample case I have laid out in this book before an American jury to let them decide whether George W Bush is guilty or not guilty of murder, and if so, what his punishment should be.

Even if this doesn't happen and what I have said in this book receives all the attention of a new fly in the forest, I do know that someone had to say what is written on the pages of this book."

Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, the Powerful Forces That Put It in the White House, and What Their Influence Means for America
by Russ Baker

How did Bush happen? How did George W. Bush, of all people, rise to the most powerful position in the world? This simple question sparked a five-year investigative odyssey by Russ Baker. What he found will force us to rethink virtually everything we thought we knew about the Bush family and its role in shaping recent American history.

In FAMILY OF SECRETS, Baker reveals that Bush, the people around him, and his policies are but an extreme, very public manifestation of what his family and its circle have always been about: an interlocking web of covert and overt machinations on behalf of a small cluster of elites-social, financial, industrial, military, intelligence-that enabled the Bush dynasty and propelled George W. Bush to the top.

Rules for Radicals
by Saul D Alinsky

"What follows is for those who want to change the world from what it is to what they believe it should be. The Prince was written by Machiavelli for the Haves on how to hold power. Rules for Radicals is written for the Have-Nots on how to take it away."

In 1971, Saul Alinsky wrote an entertaining classic on grassroots organizing titled Rules for Radicals. For Alinsky, organizing is the process of highlighting what is wrong and convincing people they can actually do something about it.

The End of America: Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot
by Naomi Wolf

In a stunning indictment of the Bush administration and Congress, best-selling author Naomi Wolf lays out her case for saving American democracy. In authoritative research and documentation Wolf explains how events of the last six years parallel steps taken in the early years of the 20th century’s worst dictatorships such as Germany, Russia, China, and Chile.

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
by Naomi Klein

Naomi Klein's The Shock Doctrine advances a truly unnerving argument: historically, while people were reeling from natural disasters, wars and economic upheavals, savvy politicians and industry leaders nefariously implemented policies that would never have passed during less muddled times. As Klein demonstrates, this reprehensible game of bait-and-switch isn't just some relic from the bad old days. It's alive and well in contemporary society, and coming soon to a disaster area near you. --Kim Hughes
